About us

Our Stonemasonry team

We offer fantastic quality workmanship and a personal, dedicated service. We’ll provide you with a point of contact throughout your project, with design and planning where required, and we can advise you on how to achieve the results you want.

Fermor Stone sprang into life in 2003 when Wesley returned from a period of travelling and wanted a fresh challenge in his career. He carried on as a sole trader stonemason until 2007 when he became a joint director of Fermor and Ellis Ltd. Ten years later Wesley took over the business and has run it since then. In 2023, whilst having a new website made, it seemed like a good time to revert back to the original company name!

We have a small workshop in West Sussex, which consists of the saw shop containing primary and secondary stone saws and the banker shop where final shaping is undertaken. We purchase stone as block and scant, always keeping a good stock of the more common native stones. All production and fixing is completed by us – we made the choice to stay small and focus on high quality workmanship.

Here at Fermor Stone, our workload is divided between the workshop and being out on site. The majority of our work is restoration undertaken on listed buildings. This includes a selection of traditional building techniques based around the use of lime mortars such as pointing, flintwork, ornate brickwork and the matching of existing materials.   In addition, we are all fully trained and experienced with the Thermatech stone cleaning system.

Wesley Fermor

Wesley Fermor

Company Director Wesley’s experience stretches back to 1993 when he first began working at a local stonemasonry firm. Whilst undertaking a block release apprenticeship, Wesley’s skills really shone through, earning him the Best Apprentice Award, bronze and silver medals for a SkillBuild competition, finalist status in the Youth Skill Olympics and of course, the original quest of an NVQ Level 3 in Stonemasonry.

Rhys Dines

Rhys is the youngest member of the team and he undertook an ‘in house’ apprenticeship with us here at Fermor Stone. This followed the exact format of the course taken by Wesley and Mark and taught Rhys the skills he needed. Although it was a lot of work for all of us, Rhys’ desire to succeed and attention to detail shone through from day one.

He is passionate about his work and has become a valued and highly skilled member of our team.
